Atupele Restaurant & Cottages near Mikumi National Park

If your Tanzania itinerary includes Mikumi National Park or the wider Southern Circuit, one name comes up again and again among travellers and guides alike: Atupele Restaurant & Cottages. It’s one of the accommodation partners we work with most often at Climatical Safaris, and for good reason — it sits right at the gateway to Mikumi, making it the natural base for a Southern Tanzania safari from Dar es Salaam or Zanzibar.

A Southern Circuit base done right

Atupele is set on Kikwalaza Street in Mikumi town, Morogoro region, close enough to the park gate that a pre-dawn game drive doesn’t mean a pre-dawn transfer first. The property is built around a cluster of round thatched cottages and family suites, with a central pool area — including a separate children’s pool — and a restaurant serving freshly prepared local and international dishes.

Rooms range from cosy round-hut doubles and twins through to an extra-large family suite that comfortably sleeps up to eight adults, so Atupele works equally well for a couple passing through on a two-day Mikumi safari or a family group settling in for several nights. Every room (aside from the hostel-style option) is en-suite with bed linen, towels, toiletries and a private outdoor seating area — small touches that matter after a dusty day on safari.

More than a place to sleep

What sets Atupele apart is how much there is to do without leaving the property’s orbit. Guests can arrange day, walking or night-time safaris into Mikumi, join a traditional Maasai boma cultural tour, hike out to the Kigaga waterfalls, or take a cycling excursion through the surrounding sugarcane country and river landscapes. It’s the kind of place that turns a one-night stopover into a reason to stay two or three.

What’s included

Atupele keeps things simple and transparent: free laundry, late check-out, complimentary Wi-Fi, and an in-room dining option are all part of the stay, with no hidden add-ons. Food is priced separately — lunch to go or eat in runs around $10 per person, and a three-course dinner around $20 — with an à la carte menu also available.

Booking through Climatical Safaris

We route many of our Mikumi and Southern Circuit itineraries through Atupele because the location, comfort and flexibility line up so well with how we build safaris — short game-drive transfers, real cultural add-ons, and a relaxed base to return to at the end of the day. If you’d like Atupele included in your Tanzania trip, let us know when you enquire and we’ll build it into your itinerary.
