Mikumi National Park

Mikumi National Park

Just a few hours from Dar es Salaam — by road or on the SGR express train to Morogoro — Mikumi National Park offers one of Tanzania’s most accessible and rewarding safari experiences. Often compared to the Serengeti for the open grasslands of its Mkata floodplain, Mikumi delivers classic African game viewing in a beautiful, mountain-ringed setting that remains refreshingly uncrowded.

The Mkata Floodplain

The heart of Mikumi is the Mkata floodplain — a vast, flat grassland surrounded by the Uluguru Mountains to the north and the Lumango Range to the east. Large herds of elephant, buffalo, wildebeest, and zebra graze year-round across the open landscape. Giraffes browse the acacia woodland at the floodplain’s edge. Warthog families trot through the short grass. Hippos wallow in the pools along the Mkata River.

Lions are a regular and reliable presence — often spotted resting beneath acacia trees during the midday heat, or moving through the tall grass at dawn. Mikumi’s lions are known to use termite mounds as observation platforms, scanning the floodplain for prey in a behaviour identical to their Serengeti cousins. Leopards are more secretive but present, most often seen in the riverine woodland at dusk.

The SGR Connection

Mikumi holds a unique place among Tanzania’s national parks: it is the only major wildlife destination directly connected to Dar es Salaam by the SGR high-speed railway. The modern train departs Dar es Salaam early morning and arrives in Morogoro in under two hours — from where our guide meets you for the short drive to the park. This is the backbone of our popular 2 Days 1 Night Mikumi Safari package — genuine Tanzania wildlife without a long journey or a flight.

Rare and Special Wildlife

Mikumi is one of the few parks in Tanzania where the sable antelope is regularly seen — a magnificent, curved-horned antelope with jet-black flanks and a striking white face. African wild dogs also pass through Mikumi, using corridors that connect the park to the vast Nyerere ecosystem to the south. With over 400 bird species recorded, Mikumi also offers exceptional birdwatching, particularly around the floodplain pools and along the Mkata River.

The Mountain Setting

Unlike the flat open horizons of the Serengeti, Mikumi’s wildlife viewing takes place within a dramatic mountain frame. The Uluguru Mountains rise steeply to the north, their forested slopes forming a dark green backdrop to the golden floodplain below. At golden hour, the light in Mikumi has a warmth and richness that photographers consistently rate among the finest in Tanzania.
